The Alpine CDE-170E is a basic unit with a simple design and features. It only comes in red key colours with white text illumination. This is not customizable. This model still has the good ol' volume knob which we find to be super easy to use when you want to keep your eyes on the road.

This unit is made to work with Android smartphones using the Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) which allows for transfer of audio via USB. You could still control playback functions from iPod or iPhone although limited. For Apple / iOS users, it is better you pick the CDE-173EBT instead as the CDE-170E lacks support for the iOS.

This head unit supports FLAC/MP3/WMA/AAC so you can rest assured the most popular audio file formats are supported. Music playback control from Spotify is also available.

Overall this is a decent unit with great sound. So if you are looking for something really basic and affordable, then is could be it. However, if you want some additional functions like Bluetooth, customizable colors and better iOS compatibility, then we highly recommend the CDE-173EBT
